How to Find Your Interior Design Style - Take the Challenge Today

Knowing how to find your interior design style is key to creating a home you love. One of the questions I ask in my ‘Welcome Questionnaire’ before I work with a client is this - ‘Do you know what your interior design style is? If so (or if not), could you describe it?’

This question usually stops my clients right in their tracks…  they think, ‘is this a pop quiz?’ ‘ Should I know my style? ‘ ‘Do I have a style?'?’

And I have to say, this is a tough one for most people to figure out. Maybe you like a bunch of different styles which feel conflicting or maybe you don't think you have a style (you do, by the way)??

BUT, once you know how to find your interior design style (or most likely a mix of styles) you can really start creating a home that looks like you. One that truly feels like home when you walk through the door. There are lots of ways to get to the bottom of your style.

Here are a few things I go though with my clients to get to figure it out. It’s actually really fun and in the process you will determine what you love about the things in your homes (bonus!).

How to find your interior design style challenge

1 - Determine your favorite furniture items in your home. Walk through each room and identify the furniture you do like in that room. Then take a picture of each one. It's fine to just take a quick snap on your camera phone.

2 - Now do the same but go through each room and find your favorite accessories or room decor. Take a quick pic of those too.

3 - Finally, go into your wardrobe and put together your favorite outfit (including shoes and jewellery)...  You know what to do, take a pic.

Do you noticing any similarities? Any styles or colours repeating? You may notice 2 or 3 styles popping up. This is great because mixing 2 to 3 styles is the best way to create an interesting room .

Optional step - use inspirational images to help you. Go onto Pinterest, Houzz. or even a Google search and start saving EVERY interior image that you like. Don’t think about ‘will this work in my home?’ Or ‘is this practical?’ If it catches your eye, save it. Try to save up to 100 interior images and then go through them. You WILL start to see a pattern and can slowly start eliminating the one off images you selected. Keep narrowing it down. Before you know it, you will have a group of similar-looking interior images. This is a great start to making sure your home reflects your personal style and preferences!
